Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska eased into the third round of the WTA Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati with a straight sets victory over Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson. The Pole did not have things all her own away as both players broke serve on numerous occasions, but she did enough to get through in straight sets, winning 6-4 6-3. Radwanska will be joined in the third round by sister Urszula who progressed after her opponent, Yaroslava Shvedova, retired from their contest. The Kazakh player had taken the opening set 6-4, but opted to pull out with cramp in the second when trailing 4-1. Number 11 seed Dominika Cibulkova was another casualty in the scorching conditions as she pulled out of her encounter with Czech Andrea Hlavackova when a set and 4-1 down.

Fourth seed Petra Kvitova was forced to come from a set down before clinching a hard-fought 3-6 6-2 7-5 success over Germany's Mona Barthel. Italy's seventh seed, and Roland Garros finalist, Sara Errani ensured she will take her place in the next round following a 6-4 6-4 win over Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova. However, there were defeats for two other Italians as home player Sloane Stephens beat Camille Giorgi 6-2 6-1 and China's Peng Shuai overcame Roberta Vinci 6-3 6-4. Meanwhile, 17th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova produced a fine display to beat Julia Goerges of Germany 6-3 6-0.
