Fifth seed suffers shock second round exit

Unheralded Slovakian Martin Klizan caused the shock of men's US Open draw by beating fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round. Andy Murray would have been expecting to meet the Frenchman in the quarter-finals, but he looked horribly out of form as he crashed out 6-4 1-6 6-1 6-3 to the left-hander. Tsonga, a quarter-finalist here in 2011 and a semi-finalist at Wimbledon last month where he lost to Murray, looked like he had turned things around in the second set. But Klizan defied all expectations by winning the third before roaring into a 4-0 lead in the fourth.

One last effort

Tsonga summoned one last effort, clawing his way back to 4-3, but that was as good as it got, Klizan winning the next two games. Klizan, ranked 52nd in the world, has had a good season but had never beaten anyone close to the calibre of Tsonga before and lost to Britain's Dan Evans in the Davis Cup earlier this year. He had never before reached the third round at a Grand Slam tournament, whilst Tsonga last failed to make the third round of a Slam in Australia way back in 2007. American Mardy Fish survived a huge scare as he recovered from two sets down to beat Russia's Nikolay Davydenko The 23rd seed began slowly but found his form just in time to clinch a 4-6 6-7 6-2 6-1 6-2 victory and become the 10th man in the tournament to win from two sets down.
