Number one seed Fabio Fognini marched into the quarter-finals of the Vegeta Croatia Open in Umag after coming through a tight first set.
The Italian needed a tie-break to ease ahead of Spaniard Albert Montanes, but raced through the second set to secure his passage with a 7-6 (7/2) 6-0 victory.
Fognini will face 17-year-old Croatian wild-card entry Borna Coric following the former junior world number one and US Open champion's win over qualifier Horacio Zeballos.
Coric too got the better of a first-set tie break on his way to a 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 success.
Fourth seed Joao Sousa looked to be in the driving seat when he took the first set against Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3.
However, the Russian hit back to win the next two 6-4 6-2 and book a last-eight clash with another qualifier, Pablo Cuevas.
Argentinian Cuevas made light work of Italian sixth seed Andreas Seppi, ensuring his place with a 6-3 6-1 victory.
