Caroline Wozniacki wasted no time in sealing her spot in the second round of the Rogers Cup as she dropped just two games in beating Daniela Hantuchova.
The in-form Dane – who won her first tournament of the season at the Istabul Cup towards the end of last month – was simply far too consistent for her Slovakain opponent as she raced away to a 6-1 6-1 win.
14th seed Carla Suarez Navarro also came through in straight sets as she beat Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski 6-4 6-3.
Venus Williams was taken to three but eventually overcame Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the American prevailing 6-1 3-6 6-2.
Former US Open champion Sam Stosur eased past Monica Puig 6-2 6-2 while her fellow Australian Casey Dellacqua saw off Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 6-0 4-6 6-2.
In the day’s other first-round encounters there were wins for Caroline Garcia, Karolina Pliskova, Elena Vesnina, Coco Vandeweghe and Ekaterina Makarova.
