The Spanish Tennis Federation has appointed former WTA player Gala Leon Garcia as its first female Davis Cup captain.
The 40-year-old will replace Carlos Moya, who stepped down as captain after Spain dropped out of the World Group for the first time since 1996 following their playoff defeat to Brazil.
Five-time champions Spain were without both Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer for the loss to Brazil and their defeat to Germany earlier this year.
Leon Garcia achieved a career-high singles ranking of 27 during her 14-year career that ended in 2004.
Andy Murray, who is coached by Amelie Mauresmo, tweeted his congratulations to Leon Garcia after hearing the news of her appointment.
"Congrats to Gala Leon Garcia for becoming first female Spanish Davis Cup captain... hopefully first of many!" tweeted the Scot.
