Jarkko Nieminen booked his place in the second round of the Stockholm Open with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
The Finn - making his 15th appearance in the hard-court tournament - overcame his Spanish opponent in one hour and 33 minutes despite converting only three of the 11 break-point chances he created.
His reward is a meeting with either another Spaniard in Fernando Verdasco, who is the seventh seed in Sweden, or Australian Marinko Matosevic.
Meanwhile, Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia advanced in straight sets, beating Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-2 6-4.
Gabashvili broke Falla six times - three in each set - but lost his serve three times as well. He will next face second seed and defending champion Grigor Dimitrov.
Australia's Bernard Tomic also progressed, defeating Patrik Rosenholm of Sweden 7-6 (7/1) 5-7 6-4 in a match that lasted nearly two hours.
Top seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, champion two years ago in Stockholm, has a bye into the second round.
