US Open champion Marin Cilic is facing a battle to be fit for the Australian Open due to a right shoulder injury.

The world No 9 has yet to withdraw from the Melbourne showpiece which starts on January 19.

However, the Croatian was forced to pull out of this week’s Brisbane International due to the problem and admits it is “highly questionable” if he will be able to play.

"Since there is very little time for a full recovery and training, my appearance at the Australian Open is unfortunately under a big question mark,” admitted the 26-year-old.

"I have not cancelled my appearance in Melbourne. I will leave it for another seven to eight days to see how the situation will develop.”

Cilic claimed in December that he had been struggling with the injury the past “five to six” months.
