Roland Garros: Significant rise in prize money for French Open
Tuesday 14 April 2015 12:53, UK
Prize money for this year's French Open in Paris has been increased by 3m euros to 28m euros.
The men's and women's singles champions will each receive 1.8m euros, a raise of 150,000 euros from 2014.
The two beaten finalists will each earn 900,000 euros, which is 75,000 euros more than 12 months ago.
In all, prize-money will rise by 12%, with the lion's share of the increase destined for early-round losers.
Payouts for second and third round losers will rise by around 20%, with those surviving one round pocketing at least 50,000 euros.
But the singles champions will still receive less than at the other three grand slams.
Tournament director and French Tennis Federation general director Gilbert Ysern said: "This notable increase in prize money is part of the four-year plan that was put in place for 2013 until 2016.
"Players eliminated in the first week will be the principal beneficiaries."
The clay court Grand Slam at Roland Garros begins on May 24 and ends 15 days later.
