World number one thrashes Pfizenmaier but Bartoli sent packing

Top seed Victoria Azarenka cruised into the third round of the French Open after needing less than an hour to see off Dinah Pfizenmaier 6-1 6-1. In contrast to her hard-fought win over Alberta Brianti in the opening round, Azarenka this time defeated her German opponent in 55 minutes. Pfizenmaier, who came through the qualifying draw to reach the main stage at Roland Garros, did not help her already slim chances by making 29 unforced errors. The Grand Slam debutant did win the first game of the match before dropping 11 straight as her Belarusian opponent quickly moved to the brink of victory. Pfizenmaier then managed to a avoid a 'bagel' set but world number one Azarenka soon compkleted the job, setting up a clash with either Aleksandra Wozniak, who beat Zheng Jie 6-2 6-4, in the next round. "It was a different game for sure today," Azarenka said, referring to her scare against Brianti in the previous round. "I didn't really know my opponent and it took a few games to understand what she does. But after a few games I found my rhythm and definitely played much better today."

Bartoli woe

Elsewhere in the second round, home favourite Marion Bartoli suffered a major shock as she was sent crashing out by Croatia's Petra Martic. The eighth seed, a semi-finalist last year, looked to have recovered after going a set down but was edged out in the deciding set as Martic claimed a 6-2 3-6 6-3 victory. US Open champion Samantha Stosur was also a comfortable winner in the second round as she had no trouble defeating Irina Falconi 6-1 6-4. Stosur quickly raced into a 5-0 lead in the first set before the American started to make things a little more competitive and put on a respectable showing for the remainder of the contest. Dominika Cilbulkova, the 15th seed, was another to go through in straight sets, the Slovak overpowered American Vania King to emerge a 6-0 6-2 victor. Number 13 seed Ana Ivanovic also eased into the third round as she claimed a 6-2 6-2 victory over Shahar Peer of Israel. Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was given a slightly sterner test against Chan Yung-Jan but still came through to take a 6-4 7-6 win.
