Roger Federer: Top seed for US Open

World number one Roger Federer will head into the US Open as the top seed while Andy Murray moves up to third seed for the year's final grand slam event.

The seeding, which is done in accordance with ATP rankings that were released on Monday, sees only one major change, with Murray promoted to third seed in the light of the absence of world number three Rafael Nadal.

The Spaniard was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to the same knee injury which also forced him to miss out on the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Nadal's fellow Spaniard David Ferrer is the main beneficiary of his absence, as he now moves up into that fourth place spot for the tournament in New York.

John Isner is the highest seeded American, coming in at number nine. The other seeded Americans who will carry the home hopes at Flushing Meadows are Andy Roddick (20), Mardy Fish, (23) and Sam Querrey (27).

The draw for next week's tournament will be made on Thursday.
