Sixth seed enjoys straight sets win

Anna Chakvetadze will face India's Sania Mirza in the third round of the US Open. Both enjoyed straight sets victories in their second round matches on Thursday to advance to the last 32. Sixth seed Chakvetadze was too good for Australia's Nicole Pratt, recording a 6-3 6-4 success. The Russian, who has reached the quarter-finals of the Australian and French Opens this year, can expect a sterner test against Mirza, although she has beaten the 26th seed three times on hardcourts this year. Mirza, who reached the fourth round on her debut at Flushing Meadows two years ago was a 6-3 7-5 winner over Laura Granville of the United States. "In the second set she started playing a lot better. It was just a good match. She is a really good player," Mirza said. "I'm happy where I am but I would like to be a little further up. I'm just taking it one match at a time. I'm quite happy with how I'm playing." Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova also reached the third round, but she was made to work hard by Camille Pin. The Frenchwoman took the second set to force a decider, but crumbled as she allowed the fourth seed to win 6-3 4-6 6-0. Kuznetsova led 3-1 in the second set but lost five of the next six games. Forced to stay out on court for longer than expected, she upped her game and dropped just nine points in the final set. Martina Hingis won her second round match, beating world number 106 Pauline Parmentier of France 6-2 7-5. The pair traded six breaks of serve, culminating in Parmentier missing the chance to serve out the second set and level the match, before Hingis prevailed. Seventh seed Nadia Petrova was untroubled by compatriot Anastasia Rodionova as she booked her place in the third round. Petrova won 7-5 6-1 to set up a meeting with either Michaelle Krajicek or Agnes Szavay.
