Top seed easily beaten by American teenager

Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli was beaten in straight sets by Vania King in the first round of the Kolkata Open. Top seed Bartoli was punished for making far too many unforced errors as she lost 6-1 7-5 to the American teenager. The world number 12 blamed her defeat on the slow surface at the indoor tournament. "The slow surface gives the opponent more chance to return the balls," she told reporters. "I haven't played her before so tactically I did not get a chance to prepare." Losing the top seed was a second big blow for the event after home favourite Sania Mirza was forced to pull out with a wrist injury.
