Serena retirment enables loval favourite to make the secound round in Zurich.
Local favourite Patty Schnyder booked her place in the second round of the Zurich Open after Serena Williams was forced to retire injured when 6-0 3-0 down.
Williams never looked at the races as she lost her first two service games comfortably and she briefly left the court when 3-0 down in the opening set.
Schnyder was ruthless as she powered to the opening set 6-0 and took just 22 minutes as Williams could only win three more points.
Sixth seed Williams was trailing 3-0 when the umpire announced her retirement from the match, handing Schnyder a place in the next round.
"I don't think I've ever played a match like that but I just concentrated on playing my tennis," shrugged Schnyder in an on-court interview following Williams's departure.
"I was checking the situation and trying to focus on my own game. I still had to play some good shots and keep it together mentally which is not so easy.
"After the first set I kind of suspected she might retire. But then I got kind of nervous because in the second set she really started trying."
Williams wanted to play on Tuesday despite coming off a three-set loss to Elena Dementieva at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow on Sunday.
"Normally she needs a rest after two weeks of tournaments," Schnyder added. "But I like that she came here and tried."
Williams was upset that she had to retire from the match, and was also unhappy at the crowd's reaction to her quitting.
"I was hitting really well yesterday and moving well," Williams said. "But before warmup I saw the trainer and said, 'Something's not right."'
"I hate to quit. I'm not a quitter. I don't like people to think, 'She gave up.' Maybe I worry too much about what other people say."
Former world number on Amelie Mauresmo had to battle to beat Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-4 4-6 6-3.
The Frenchwoman capitalised after Daniilidou had some ankle trouble and Mauresmo made it count in the third set when she jumped out to a 5-2 lead and claiming the win on her next serve.
"It would have been surprising for me to play my best tennis in the first round here and win in two quick sets," Mauresmo said.
"The main thing was to win. That's what I've been focusing on recently.
"I would have preferred to finish in the second set but I knew a third set would be difficult for her even if she was moving really well."
Mauresmo has been struggling since having an appendectomy in March.
"My surgery really killed me for the rest of the season. I definitely haven't been playing my best tennis for a few months now," Mauresmo said.
Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli advanced into the next round after she defeated Peng Shuai of China 6-7 6-0 6-1.
Eighth seed Mauresmo will now play world number 25 Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine for a place in the quarter-finals, while Schnyder takes on the winner of Wednesday's final opening round match between Russia's Elena Dementieva and Italy's Francesca Schiavone.
