Richard Gasquet was one of three seeds to crash out on day seven of the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Davydenko, Nalbandian sent packing in straight sets
Richard Gasquet became one of three seeds to exit the Australian Open on Sunday when he suffered the same fate as Andy Murray against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The world number 38 reached his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final when he triumphed 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 against his good friend in Melbourne.
The pair played doubles together in the Sydney International recently but were on opposite sides of the net this time around.
Tsonga's win, which came in three hours and 19 minutes, means he stretches his excellent run in the tournament into a second week.
It is also the second time he has upset the form book Down Under. He started his campaign by beating ninth seed Murray on the opening day.
"I have had to play against him (Gasquet) all of my career, so now I would like to say it's normal," Tsonga said.
"It's difficult to play a friend, and you have to separate everything, say 'Ok, we are friends but when we are on the court, it's different, and I need to do my best to beat him'."
Seeds struggle
Russian Mikhail Youzhny will be Tsonga's next opponent after he saw off compatriot Nikolay Davydenko.
The fourth seed simply had no answer to Youzhny, losing 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-1 in their fourth-round clash.
David Nalbandian was another big name to tumble, the Argentine failing to get beyond round three as he was swept aside in straight sets by Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Former world number one Ferrero made the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time since he reached the semi-finals in 2004 with a comprehensive 6-1 6-2 6-3 over the 10th seed.
Meanwhile, Philipp Kohlschreiber's impressive run at Melbourne Park is over after he was knocked out by Jarkko Nieminen at Margaret Court Arena.
Kohlschreiber looked to be carrying on from where he left off against American Andy Roddick when he took the opening set 6-3.
However, the 24th seed from Finland won the next two in back-to-back tie-breakers - which ended 9-7 and 11-9 in his favour - and sealed the match by taking the fourth set 6-3.
