Novak Djokovic said he hoped to make his Australian Open title the first of many.
Third seed's Melbourne success sparks Serb celebrations
Novak Djokovic celebrated becoming the first Serbian to win a Grand Slam title and said he hoped to add many more to his collection.
The third seed, who put out world number one Roger Federer in the semi-finals, fought back from a set down to beat unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sunday's final.
"I am very happy to have won my first Grand Slam here," Djokovic told the crowd after a 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6 success on the Rod Laver Arena.
"I hope to see you here in this position many times more.
"I want to thank all the Serbian fans who came here to support me - I am so proud to be the first Serbian to win a Grand Slam title.
"I think it will be crazy house back in Serbia right now.
Control
"I was trying to stay there with Jo because I knew that sooner or later with my style of the game I could get in control of the match, which I did in the middle of the second set.
"Today I was nervous on the start because I was in the strange situation of being the favourite in the final of a Grand Slam," added Djokovic, whose previous appearance in a major final ended with defeat to Federer at the US Open last year.
"It was dangerous, but I managed to cope with the pressure well and to win."
Tsonga, who beat Andy Murray in the first round before shocking Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals, began the match well but was unable to sustain his high level of performance.
"I'm very proud of myself," he said. "I don't know if I'm sad or happy. Novak played very well and it was tough."
