Hopes of British progress in the ladies’ draw at Wimbledon rest on the shoulders of Heather Watson after Naomi Broady fell to Caroline Wozniacki, who booked her place in the third round with a straight sets success on Wednesday.
The British No 4 was beaten 6-3 6-2 by the former world No 1 who will now face Ana Konjuh after the Croatian's comeback victory over Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.
Defeat for Broady means Watson is the lone remaining British hope in the women's draw and the world No 60 faces a tough test against ninth seed Angelique Kerber on Centre Court on Thursday.
Dane Wozniacki backed up her run to the Easbourne semi-finals by making a dream start to the second round clash on Court No 1, breaking the 24-year-old Briton to take a 2-0 lead in the first set.
Despite former British Under 18 champion Broady firing a 117mph serve to hold to love, Wozniacki wrapped up the opening set in professional style by closing out on her own serve.
Wozniacki, who has never progressed further than the fourth round, again made an early break in the second set as she pushed herself into a commanding position.
Although possessing a powerful serve, Broady’s loose forehand play contributed to her demise as Wozniacki claimed a second break to move 4-1 ahead.
Self-funded Broady refused to crumble however, holding her serve, only for Wozniacki to close out the match with ease in the following game.
Konjuh, meanwhile, was forced to come from behind to secure her place in the next round. Belgian Wickmayer claimed the first se but Konjuh, who has never reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, stormed back to record a 3-6 6-2 6-2 victory.
