Top seed Fernando Gonzalez is through to the second round of the Movistar Open following a 7-5 6-3 victory over Paul Capdeville. The two-time Vina del Mar winner will face Argentina's Diego Hartfield in the next round of the claycourt competition. Hartfield knocked out countryman Mariano Zabaleta 6-3 7-5, but second seed Juan Ignacio Chela crashed out after losing 7-6 (7-0) 6-2 to world number 104 Fabio Fognini. Italian Fognini will take on qualifier David Marrero after the Spaniard beat local player Adrian Garcia 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4.

Luis Horna made a successful start to the defence of his title with a 6-4 6-4 victory over fifth seed Agustin Calleri. The Peruvian faces Carlos Berlocq in the second round after the Argentinian overcame France's Nicolas Devilder 7-5 6-2. Fourth seed Fernando Verdasco also advanced courtesy of a 6-4 6-3 win over Chile's Hans Podlipnik. The Spaniard will next face Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas, who defeated former world number Guillermo Coria, next.
