Italian top seed falls at the first hurdle

Flavia Pennetta failed to build on the fifth WTA title of her career as she bowed out of the Copa Colsanitas Santander in Bogota. The Italian had won the Vina del Mar championship on Sunday, however her celebrations were cut short Argentine qualifier Betina Jozami, who wrapped up a 6-1 2-6 6-4 victory. Top-seed Pennetta had won the tournament in Colombia in 2005 and was runner-up in 2006, however she struggled to recreate the form which saw her jump into the world's top-30. Pennetta will be joined on the flight home by fourth-seeded Frenchwoman Emilie Loit, who was brushed aside Paraguay's Rossana De Los Rios 7-5 6-3. However, the rest of the seeds managed to avoid early exits with third-seeded Pauline Parmentier advancing with a straight-sets win over Germany's Julia Schruff 6-4 6-3. Fifth seed Yvonne Meusburger cruised to a 6-4 6-4 win over American Jill Craybas 6-4 6-4, while seventh-seeded Edina Gallovits advanced with a 6-1 6-2 win over India's Sunitha Rao. Ninth-seeded German Martina Muller beat Viky Nunez Fuentes 7-5 7-6 (7-5) to progress, while Mariya Koryttseva posted a 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7-3) victory over Petra Cetkovska.
