Garbine Muguruza set for WTA world number one ranking

Garbine Muguruza will become the new WTA world No 1 when the updated rankings are released next Monday.
The reigning Wimbledon champion, who lost to Petra Kvitova in the US Open fourth round, will overtake current incumbent Karolina Pliskova after the Czech lost to CoCo Vandeweghe in the quarter-finals on Wednesday and thereby failed to defend her runner-up points from last year's tournament in New York.
The 23-year-old, who was born in Venezuela, becomes the second player representing Spain to reach the landmark after Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario held the position across three different spells in 1995.
Only Venus Williams, who lost to Muguruza in this year's Wimbledon final, has also reached the second week of all four Grand Slam tournament's this year.
Muguruza claimed her maiden Grand Slam title in 2016, at the age of 22, when she shocked the then top-ranked Serena Williams in the French Open final at Roland Garros to gain some revenge for losing out in the Wimbledon final, to the same player, in 2015.
"I'm very excited to share with all of you my dream of becoming the next world number one on Monday," Muguruza said in a video message posted to her Twitter account on Wednesday.
"I would never be in this position without the help of my family, my team, and my fans. Like I said before it's a dream come true, so hopefully I can keep it up as long as possible."
