American sixth seed brushed aside in straight sets
Andy Roddick was sent crashing out of the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells by Tommy Haas.
The sixth-seeded American had arrived at the Masters event in fine form, however he was broken once in each set as he lost 6-4 6-4.
Haas, who has now won seven out of his 10 meetings with Roddick, had endured a stuttering start to 2008 after undergoing shoulder surgery in November last year.
However despite only returning to action in February the 29-year-old German quickly found his rhythm to record the impressive win.
Quality
He broke Roddick in the ninth game of the first set before serving out for a crucial lead.
The break in the second set came in the seventh game and although Roddick desperately tried to claw his way back, Haas was able to see out the match.
"Today was one of the matches where I won the majority of the important points," said Haas, who closed out the win with a forehand that clipped the top of the net and fell onto Roddick's side of the court.
"When I broke him, I really played some great points, backhand and forehand passing shots and forehand lobs, and that was really the only difference."
Qualification
Haas joins Tommy Robredo, Nicolas Mahut and Radek Stepanek in making it through to the third round.
Spaniard Robredo overcame Nicolas Massu of Chile 6-4 5-7 7-6 (7-5), while Mahut recorded a 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 win against Nicolas Almagro.
The 29th seeded Radek Stepanek beat Max Mirnyi 6-4 6-2, Spain's Fernando Verdasco defeated Victor Hanescu 4-6 6-4 6-3.
Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia beat Mario Cilic 7-6 (9-7) 7-5 and finally, American Mardy Fish overcame Russia's Igor Andreev 6-4 6-3.
