Federer's conqueror unable to maintain his form
Indian Wells finalist Mardy Fish's recent run of form has come to an abrupt end at the Sony Ericsson Open.
The unseeded American, who knocked out world number one Roger Federer at the Pacific Life Open just a week ago, was knocked out of the first round in Miami by France's Arnaud Clement.
Clement showed little sign of nerves, despite his opponent's current form, and cruised to a 6-3 6-3 victory in just over an hour.
"It's pretty tough to come back a couple of days later," Fish said. "I mean, I only got here like two nights ago.
"With that being said, it's obviously a little disappointing to go out so early here. But I'm going to, obviously, take a lot of memories from last week."
Battle
Marat Safin's dismal start to the season continued meanwhile, as the former world number one was defeated 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 7-6 (7-5) by American qualifier Bobby Reynolds.
Reynolds rallied from 3-1 down in the deciding tie-break to win four straight points and hand the Russian his fifth loss in six matches.
Elsewhere, Frenchman Gael Monfils came from a set down to beat American wildcard John Isner 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 6-3 to book a second-round meeting with top seed Federer.
