Jelena Jankovic and Maria Sharapova both began their Family Circle Cup campaigns with comfortable victories.
Good day for the seeds in Charleston
Jelena Jankovic began the defence of her Family Circle Cup title with a 7-5 6-0 win over Alexandra Stevenson.
The top seed lost her serve twice as she struggled in the opening set, before cruising through the second to reach the third round.
Stevenson, playing in her first main draw since August 2006, failed to take any of her three break points as she faded in the second set.
Jankovic will face Russia's Anastasia Rodionova in the third round after she defeated Aravane Rezai of France 6-3 6-4.
Sublime Sharapova
Second seed Maria Sharapova also progressed with a 6-0 6-0 victory over Bethanie Mattek.
Sharapova, fresh from winning her maiden clay court title in Florida last week, converted all six break points on her way to a 'double doughnut' win.
Elena Dementieva and Vera Zvonereva, the Russian fourth and ninth seeds, reached round three with easy victories.
Dementieva, who was the runner-up on her last visit to Charleston in 2005, beat Jill Craybas 6-0 6-2.
Zvonereva, meanwhile, needed only 48 minutes to beat Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-1 6-0.
Two-time finalist Patty Schnyder beat Olga Govortsova of Belarus 7-6 6-0 and Victoria Azarenka saw off Sun Tiantian by the same scoreline.
