David Ferrer came through another tough test to reach the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open. The second seed was pushed all the way by Nicolas Lapentti in the third round and had to dig deep again to see off Tommy Robredo 7-6 6-4. Ferrer, the world number five, will face Stanislas Wawrinka in the last four after a match lasting two hours and five minutes. Wawrinka booked his semi-final place with a 6-3 6-7 6-4 success against Albert Montanes. Ferrer, who beat Robredo at the semi-final stage in Valencia last month, raced to a 3-0 lead but was pegged back by the 2004 Barcelona champion. Robredo forced a tie-break but Ferrer won it 7-4 when his opponent netted a backhand. Ferrer was then a break down early in the second set, but fought back to clinch another hard-earned win. In the remaining quarter-finals, three-time winner Rafael Nadal takes on Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela and Nicolas Almagro faces Denis Gremelmayr.
