Fourth seed Tommy Haas reached the second round of the Legg Mason Classic with a 6-4 4-6 6-1 victory over Rik de Voest.
Big win for world 314 Devvarman
Fourth seed Tommy Haas has advanced to the second round of the Legg Mason Classic, the German beating South African qualifier Rik de Voest 6-4 4-6 6-1.
Haas, who lost in the first round of last week's ATP event in Los Angeles, will now play France's Nicolas Mahut.
Meanwhile, American John Isner, a finalist in Washington 12 months ago but now down to 134 in the world rankings, advanced after beating eighth seed Marcel Granollers of Spain 6-3 6-7 7-6.
He will now play compatriot Donald Young, who scored a comfortable 6-3 6-1 victory over Luis Horna of Peru.
Another American player, Bobby Reynolds, scored a shock 7-6 3-6 6-4 win against French seventh seed Marc Gicquel to set up a meeting with either Germany's Denis Gremelmayr, a semi-finalist in Los Angeles, or Serbia's Viktor Troicki.
However, Monday's best result was achieved by Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman, who beat veteran American Taylor Dent 7-6 2-6 6-1.
After struggling with injury in recent years, Dent had taken a wildcard into what was his first tournament appearance of the year.
But the world number 314 instead enjoyed the biggest win of his career to set up a meeting with either third seed Feliciano Lopez or American qualifier Robert Kendrick.
Frenchman Florent Serra and Israel's Dudi Sela were the other players to advance on Monday.
Top seed Andy Roddick and another former world number one, Marat Safin, begin their campaigns on Tuesday.
