Australian quits after a string of injuries

Five-time WTA singles winner and Olympic bronze-medallist Alicia Molik has announced her retirement at the age of 27. The Australian made the decision following a number of debilitating injuries in recent years. An ear-infection forced her off the court for almost a year and, coupled with recent arm and leg injuries, she has not been able to regain the form that saw her peak at world number eight. Now Molik feels it is time to call it a day.

Draining

She said: "It's tiring and it's very draining but I guess it's a number of things culminating. "I did have a huge setback three years ago, with my middle ear problem. "It took a while to get back and since then I've struggled with a few more things that I never imagined would come along the way. "I think I'm still young enough to focus my energies on something that I feel is again challenging."
