World number one Jelena Jankovic reached the quarter-finals of the Kremlin Open with a three-set win over Vera Dushevina.
Top seed battles past Dushevina in three sets
World number one Jelena Jankovic overcame a slow start to book her place in the quarter-finals of the Kremlin Open.
Jankovic, who replaced Serena Willams at the top of the rankings last Monday, prevailed 6-7 6-3 6-2 over 77th-ranked Russian Vera Dushevina.
The Serbian, making her first appearance at the Moscow event, dropped the opening set tie-break 8-6 and then fell 2-0 behind at the start of the second set.
But she then found her range reeling off 12 of the next 15 games to earn a date in the last eight with unseeded Italian Flavia Pennetta.
Pennetta followed up her victory over sixth seed venus Williams on Sunday with a 3-6 6-4 6-4 success against Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.
Earlier, seventh seed vera Zvonareva crushed Daniela Hantuchova 6-1 6-0 to set up a quarter-final meeting with another unseeded Slovakian, Dominika Cibulkova.
Nadia Petrova also advanced after Caroline Wozniacki was forced to retire due to breathing problems.
The Danish teenager had her blood pressure checked late in the first set and eventually quit while trailing 6-4 3-2.
Meanwhile, home favourite Nikolay Davydenko kept his bid for a fifth consecutive men's Kremlin Cup title alive.
Davydenko barely broke sweat while notching a 6-1 6-1 success over Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
The Russian top seed will now take on his Davis Cup team-mate, seventh seed Marat Safin, who saw off Julien Benneteau of France 6-4 0-6 6-2.
