Stanislas Wawrinka won his semi-final against Fernando Gonzalez to set up a showdown with compatriot Roger Federer.
Wawrinka to play Federer in Melbourne final
Stanislas Wawrinka joined Roger Federer in the final of the Kooyong Classic to ensure a Swiss player will win the ATP Tour event in Melboune.
Wawrinka, who won the doubles gold medal with Federer at the Beijing Olympics, ground out a 7-6 6-7 6-4 victory over Fernando Gonzalez.
The 23-year-old was pleased to get finally get one over on his Chilean opponent.
"It was a tough match today. But I'm happy to play the final and to play against Roger," Wawrinka said.
"I lost five times before against him. The last time was the French Open when I was leading two sets to love and winning the third set."
Advice
Roger Federer has nothing but admiration for his Davis Cup team-mate, claiming he was Wawrinka's "older brother" on tour.
"It's good to have a guy who has been around the block and knows how things work and can occasionally give you the advice you need," the former world number one said.
"It was particularly nice for us to play the Davis Cup, and over the last few years he's really grown into a good player.
"Obviously, winning the Olympic Games in doubles in Beijing is going to keep us connected for the rest of our lives."
Friends
Wawrinka also values the friendship he has with Federer.
He said: "Roger is one of my best friends on the tour. It was nice to stay 10 days with him, to play the doubles and everything (in Beijing). We've always practised a lot together.
"He's someone important for me."
The two Swiss have met twice before, with Federer winning both encounters.
