Top two seeds Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic enjoyed contrasting victories in the second round of the Paris Open.
Contrasting victories for top two seeds
Serbia's Jelena Jankovic mixed brilliant winners with clumsy errors during a 6-0 3-6 6-2 success over Li Na in the second round of the Paris Open.
Jankovic, the second seed, looked set for a routine win after opening a 6-0 3-1 lead against her Chinese opponent.
But she made a string of unforced errors to allow Li to secure the second set with a run of five successive games.
That unexpected turn of events sparked Jankovic back into life and she regained control in the decider.
The world number three sealed victory on her first match point with a forehand passing shot.
"Some players, regardless of their ranking, give me more difficulties than others," said Jankovic.
"In the first set, I was dominating but then I lost my first serve percentage before regaining confidence."
Jankovic will meet home favourite Alize Cornet in the last eight after the French teenager overcame a slow start to see off Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova 1-6 6-4 6-2.
Sublime Serena
Meanwhile, top seed Serena Williams wasted little time in also reaching the quarter-finals.
The American, fresh from her triumph at the Australian Open, prevailed 6-1 6-2 in 58 minutes against unseeded Croat Karolina Sprem.
"I played better than yesterday but I have to say she did not play that well herself," said Williams said in a courtside interview. "I served very well, that went fine."
Williams will play unseeded Frenchwoman Emilie Loit in the quarter-finals.
Loit had beated Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 2-6 6-3 6-1 in her second-round contest on Wednesday.
