Top-seed falls at first hurdle to Zakopalova

Serena Williams suffered a shock 6-4 3-6 6-1 defeat to unseeded Klara Zakopalova in the first round of the WTA Marbella Open, and as a result relinquished her number one ranking. The American top seed was broken seven times by Zakopalova - ranked 95 in the world - on the clay in Marbella, as she went down to her second loss in two matches. The defeat comes just four days after an injury-hampered Williams suffered a heavy defeat to 19-year-old Belarussian Victoria Azarenka in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Zakopalova, 26, had only won two of her matches on tour in 2009 and she went into Wednesday's encounter having lost both of her previous meetings with Williams, failing to win a set. As a result of the loss, the WTA have confirmed that Russia's Dinara Safina will replace Williams, who has been the women's world number one for 11 weeks, at the top of the rankings. Zakopalova's reward for the victory is a second round clash with fellow Czech Renata Voracova.
