Russian underwent rotator cuff surgery last October

Maria Sharapova will play at the French Open, according to Russian Tennis Federation chief Shamil Tarpishchev. Sharapova had surgery last October to repair a damaged rotator cuff in her right shoulder and has yet to make her return to WTA Tour singles action. The 21-year-old played in the doubles at Indian Wells in March but pulled out of the following week's Miami tournament in order to rest the shoulder. "I talked to Sharapova's father recently," Tarpishchev was quoted by AFP. "He told me Maria was preparing to play at Roland Garros. "He also told me she was set to play one or two preparational tournaments on red clay before the French Open but had yet to decide which ones." The French Open takes place from May 24-June 7.
