Former Davis Cup great wants out of Chennai

Todd Woodbridge believes it is irresponsible of the International Tennis Federation to allow the Davis Cup tie between Australia and India go ahead in Chennai next month. Woodbridge, who helped Australia win the Davis Cup and played a national record 32 times, said the match should not go ahead when other sports events were being cancelled or moved abroad. Terror attacks in Mumbai last November forced the cancellation of cricket's ICC Champions League while the current Indian Premier League was switched to South Africa because the local police could not guarantee the security of the players. Australia have asked the ITF to move the match but following a security review the governing body ruled that the May 8-10 clash should go ahead. "The main thing right now in India is that there are elections underway - there's been deaths because of these elections in other parts of India, not in Chennai where this tie will be played," Woodbridge said. "But how can we expect our team to go and play in India when everybody else in that region is pulling out? "I think it's irresponsible for the ITF to expect us as players to go there and put ourselves on the line in a very, very difficult predicament with the way their social system's running." Australia have appealed the ITF's decision while the country risks being banned if it opts out of the Asia-Oceania zonal match - the winner of which will progress to the play-offs for the World Group.
