Ex-Australian Open junior champion handed lengthy ban

Australian number four Brydan Klein has been banned for six months for racial abuse. The former Australian Open junior champion, now 19, made a racial slur against South Africa's Raven Klaasen during a qualifying match at Eastbourne on June 13. The world number 186 later issued a public apology, but has now been suspended and fined an additional $10,000 on top of the $14,000 fine he received on site. An ATP statement said: "Under the ATP Code of Conduct, Klein was found to have committed the Player Major Offence, Aggravated Behavior. "The incident was deemed to have been 'behavior that is flagrant and particularly injurious to the success of a tournament or is singularly egregious.' "The determination said the use of the slur was "repugnant, and is upsetting and entirely unacceptable for this to be used in a sporting event such as the ATP World Tour where equality amongst sportsmen is a predicate to fair competition and, indeed, paramount to the success of the Tour and of the Sport." The penalty is effective from July 20 unless he appeals the decision and covers all ATP World Tour and ATP Challenger Tour events. The final two months of the suspension and extra fine will be waived, though, if Klein successfully completes a racial sensitivity training course.
