Israel are through to the semi-finals of the Davis Cup after taking an unassailable 3-0 lead against Russia.
Russia out after major upset in Tel Aviv
Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram saw off Igor Kunitsyn and Marat Safin in five sets to complete Israel's shock Davis Cup defeat of Russia.
Israel, playing in the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time in 22 years, took an unassailable 3-0 lead with the 6-3 6-4 6-7 4-6 6-4 doubles victory.
The pair of Ram and Erlich, who won the Australian Open doubles together in 2008, took the first two sets but then appeared to be tiring as the Russians fought back to bring the match level.
But a partisan crowd of over 10,000 roared them to victory in an exciting deciding set.
Erlich is still recovering from an elbow injury that sidelined him for 10 months and Saturday's contest was the first time he and Ram had played together for over a year.
Ram paid tribute to his doubles partner after the match as well as thanking the crowd for their noisy support.
"The crowd, the atmosphere here, they made me play four times better than I have been playing recently," he said.
"I didn't play well today, we had hoped we could finish it in three sets but Yoni (Jonathan) was excellent, I'm so pleased to see him back in form after recovering from his injury."
Israel will face either defending champions Spain or Germany in a September semi-final.
Other ties
In Prague, the Czech Republic opened up a 2-1 lead over Argentina in their Davis Cup quarter-final tie on Saturday.
Radek Stepanek returned after his recent knee problems to team up with Tomas Berdych, and the duo enjoyed a comfortable 6-1 6-4 6-3 over the 2008 runners-up.
Argentina left out world number five Juan Martin Del Potro in favour of Leonardo Mayer and Jose Acasuso, but the gamble failed to pay off and they grew visibly frustrated as the match progressed.
Stepanek admitted he had expected to face Del Potro after his heroics against Ivo Minar on Friday, but was pleased with the nature of the victory nonetheless.
"We played a great game today," he said. "We had things under control from the start. It was excellent.
"We were very surprised to see they left out Del Potro, who played an incredible game yesterday. I think it was a mistake, and thanks for that."
Del Potro is set to face Berdych on Sunday as Argentina seek to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
Bryans secure win
Bob and Mike Bryan kept the United States' hopes alive in their quarter-final clash in Croatia with a 6-3 6-1 6-3 victory over Roko Karanusic and Lovro Zovko.
The Bryan brothers needed to win following the defeats of James Blake and Mardy Fish on Friday, and they were never under threat after Ivo Karlovic pulled out following his five set win over Blake.
The world number one doubles pair broke Zovko in the ninth game to take the first set before galloping through the next.
The third was going in a similar vein before the Bryans were broken for the first time at 4-1, but with a break still in the bag they were able to serve out for the match.
Marin Cilic will play Blake in the opening match on Sunday as he looks to earn his side a place in the semi-finals.
Spain regained their lead over Germany when Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco defeated Nicolas Kiefer and Mischa Zverev 6-3 7-6 (7-1) 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 in Saturday's doubles.
The defending champions now have a 2-1 lead and are one win away from reaching back-to-back Davis Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2004.
Zverev and Kiefer rallied to pinch the third set but the former was broken in the fourth, allowing the Spanish pair to clinch the win.
Verdasco will have the opportunity to close out the match against Philipp Kohlschreiber while Tommy Robredo is slated to take on Andreas Beck in the final rubber.
