Former champion sees off Young
Lleyton Hewitt is through to the second round of the Legg Mason Classic following his straight sets victory over Donald Young.
The 2004 champion was forced to fight all the way in the first set by the 20-year-old before he was able to take control.
The opening exchanges saw five breaks before Hewitt, the former world No.1, crucially held his serve in the 12th game.
And the plucky Australian was able to kick on as he claimed three more breaks in the second set to claim the victory.
"We both seemed to return serve pretty well out there," said Hewitt, who was playing his first match since losing to Andy Roddick in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.
"We both didn't serve great, either, so that made life for the returner easier.
"It's always hard after a few weeks off. It's nice to get through in straight sets."
Hewitt is joined in the second round by Mikhail Youzhny, who beat American Robert Kendrick 7-5 3-6 6-1.
Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman secured a superb 6-0 7-6 (8-6) win against Japan's Yuichi Sugita, while Marc Gicquel recorded a 7-5 2-6 6-4 against Poland's Jerzy Janowicz.
Russia's Igor Kunitsyn beat Frederico Gil 7-6 (7-1) 6-4, Alejandro Falla toppled Jesse Witten 6-1 6-4, John Isner defeated Andrey Golubev 7-6 (10-8) 6-3 and Canada's Frank Dancevic overcame Colombian Santiago Giraldo 6-4 6-3.
