American becomes fourth active player to record 500 wins

Andy Roddick recorded a milestone 500th victory of his career after he overcame Sam Querrey in the third round of the Legg Mason Classic. Roddick becomes the 36th player to achieve the feat and only the fourth active one - joining Roger Federer, Carlos Moya and Australian Lleyton Hewitt. Querrey did his best to halt Roddick, who struggled with his serve before holding on for a 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 victory. "I served badly tonight. It's almost gratifying because it's a match I wouldn't have won before," said Roddick, who claimed the humid weather also hampered both players. "He had the same deal. You won't see us break each other that many times very often." Hewitt's run in Washington was brought to an end by No.2 seed Juan Martin del Potro 4-6 6-3 7-6 (7-2).

Feared

"Today we had a great match," said del Potro. "I had good shots and good serves and that was the game... The key was in the tiebreak." No.10 seed Tommy Haas and fifth-seeded Robin Soderling also needed three sets to reach the quarter-finals. Haas must have feared for the worst after he lost his second set to Juan Carlos Ferrero but he battled back to secure a 7-5 2-6 6-1 victory. "When you're down two breaks to a top player like that, it's hard to keep focused, so at some point, you just start thinking about the third set," said Haas. "I played a solid third set, so I am really happy with the win." Soderling will face del Potro in the last eight after ousting Frenchman Marc Gicquel 7-5 5-7 6-3. Fellow seeds Fernando Gonzalez and Ivo Karlovic enjoyed comfortable passages into the next stage. Fourth seed Gonzalez secured a 6-2 6-4 win over Wayne Odesnik, while Karlovic, the 11th seed, saw off the challenge of Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman 7-5 6-1.
