Mauresmo, Bartoli and Petrova suffer first-round defeats

French seeds Amelie Mauresmo and Marion Bartoli crashed out of the opening round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto. Bartoli, the No.13 seed, slumped to a 6-4 6-3 defeat against Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko, while 15th seed Mauresmo was beaten 6-2 3-6 1-6 by Francesca Schiavone. Tenth seed Nadia Petrova also fell at the first hurdle after she was beaten 6-3 6-4 by compatriot Maria Sharapova. "She had an opportunity to make the match 5-5 in the second and it was good that I finished it in two," said Sharapova. "I think we know each other's game very well, I have a pretty solid game plan when I play her and the main thing is execution. "If I do what I have in mind, I'm going to win the match." Agnieszka Radwanska ensured she didn't suffer the same fate as Petrova, Bartoli and Mauresmo, as the 14th seed progressed with a 6-3 6-3 win over Carla Suarez Navarro. Elsewhere in the first round, there were wins for Aravane Rezai, Patty Schneider, Ai Sugiyama, Kateryna Bondarenko, Agnes Szavay, Roberta Vinci, Sybille Bammer and Samantha Stosur
