Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt suffered a 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 defeat by Joachim Johansson as he was dumped out of the Proton Malaysian Open at the first hurdle. The eighth ranked Australian crashed out of the Kuala Lumpur tournament after unseeded Swede Joachim made the most of Hewitt's weak performance. The high-profile casualties continued with seventh seed and world number 19 David Ferrer also dropping out in the first round after the Spaniard suffered a 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 loss to Russian Mikhail Youzhny. It was a different story for sixth seed Tomas Berdych, with the Czech world number 16 securing a 6-1 3-6 6-2 winner against Russia's Igor Kunitsyn. Meanwhile, Karol Beck of Slovakia beat Mikhail Kukushkin, Jose Acasuso crashed out after a win from Indian Rohan Bopanna and Argentinean Martin Vassallo Arguello triumphed over Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in straight sets.
