Russian comes through in just over an hour

Nikolay Davydenko's bid to secure a place at the World Tour Finals in London remained on course after a first round victory in the Valencia Open. The Russian world number seven beat qualifier Alejandro Falla 6-2 6-1. Davydenko - seeded second behind Brit Andy Murray in Valencia - broke Colombian Falla five times, losing his own serve once, and came through in just over an hour. His win sets up a clash against Juan Monaco or Martin Vassallo Arguello at the hard court event. There are two places still up for grabs in the season-ending finals at the O2 Arena later this month. Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych was a 6-3 6-4 winner over Paul-Henri Mathieu of France, while Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez also won in straight sets, defeating Germany's Simon Greul 7-5 6-2. Albert Montanes beat qualifier Roberto Bautista-Agut 6-1 3-6 6-4 in their all-Spanish clash.
