Swiss star lands three ATP World Tour Awards

World No.1 Roger Federer cleaned up once again at the ATP World Tour Awards as the winners were announced on Wednesday. The Swiss sensation enjoyed copious success in 2009, adding the final silverware to his Grand Slam collection with his first French Open victory in June to bring him level with Pete Sampras' world record of 14 majors before smashing that mark by claiming his sixth Wimbledon trophy. Federer also reclaimed his world number one spot from Rafael Nadal and reached the 2009 Australian Open and US Open finals. The 28-year-old was awarded the Player of the Year gong for the fifth time, was chosen by fellow players to receive the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for a record sixth year in a row and was also voted ATPWorldTour.com Fans' Favourite for a seventh consecutive season.

Delighted

Federer, who made a superb start to 2010 by winning the Australian Open last month, was delighted to be recognised once again. "It was a great achievement to once again finish the season at number one, especially in a year that was so special for me off the court with my marriage and birth of my daughters," said Federer. "It is also very humbling to be awarded the sportsmanship award again by my fellow ATP players, many of whom I have known for a long time." In other awards, twins Bob and Mike Bryan of the USA were named ATP World Tour Doubles Team of the Year, American John Isner picked up the Most Improved Player of the Year award and Argentinean Horacio Zeballos was awarded the Newcomer of the Year gong after breaking into the world's top 50.
