Venus comes fighting back from a set down to defend title

Venus Williams made is back-to-back WTA Tour victories as she came from behind to successfully defend her Abierto Mexicano Telcel title. The American was again taken the full distance in Acapulco but once again came through to beat teenager Polona Hercog 2-6 6-2 6-3 in the final. After winning in Dubai last week, Williams secured a 43rd Tour title after her two-hour victory over the young Slovenian in Mexico, and successfully defend the title she won 12 months ago. 29-year-old Williams denied her 19-year-old opponent a maiden success after Hercog reached her first ever final on the red clay in Acapulco. Hercog, the world number 60, was quick out of the blocks as she broke Williams' opening service game before going on to claim the opening set. Williams had been taken to three sets in her previous two matches to reach the final and had been on the verge of an early exit in her quarter-final against Laura Pios Tio when she somehow fought back after trailing 5-1 in the third set. But like then the former world number one rallied against her inexperienced rival as she levelled the match in the second set, before claiming the decisive break in the sixth game of the third.

Ferrer revenge

In the men's event, David Ferrer avenged his loss to Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final at Buenos Aires last week to claim the title at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament in Acapulco. Third seed Ferrer won 6-3 3-6 6-1 in one hour and 47 minutes to lift his first title since his home-town success at Valencia in 2008. It also meant Ferrero was denied a hat-trick of ATP Tour titles after his impressive form during the Latin American clay-court swing had seen the former world number one win in Costa do Sauipe and Buenos Aires.
