Russian withdraws from Indian Wells

Dinara Safina will not compete at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells due to a persistent back injury, the Russian has confirmed. World number two Safina has not played on the WTA Tour since retiring injured during her fourth-round match against Maria Kirilenko at the Australian Open in January. The 23-year-old set her sights on returning in time for the $4.5-million tournament at Indian Wells but has now pushed her return date back to the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami on March 23. "Unfortunately, I will not be able to play in Indian Wells this year because of the back injury that's been bothering me since the end of last season," Safina said on her official website.
