Defeat for teenager in first match on main tour

British youngster Heather Watson was beaten 7-6 6-3 by world number 33 Elena Vesnina in the opening round of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston. Britain's US Open junior champion qualified for the main draw of a WTA Tour event for the first time thanks to victories over Ekaterina Dzehalevich and Zarina Diyas. But 10th seed Vesnina proved too experienced, although Watson was by no means outclassed in a competitive match. The pair exchanged breaks in the opening set, with 17-year-old Watson matching her opponent until the Russian edged ahead with a 7-4 win in the tie-break. Watson then claimed the opening break of the second set, but Vesnina hit straight back and then broke twice more to seal victory in an hour and 47 minutes.
