Top seed Francesca Schiavone made serene progress from the first round of the Barcelona Ladies Open, but second seed Aravane Rezai tumbled out of the clay court event.
Italian Schiavone sailed past compatriot Alberta Brianti 6-2 6-1 and will meet another Italian in the next round after Tathiana Garbin overcame Lucie Hradecka 6-4 7-5.
Second seed Rezai fell to a 6-3 6-4 loss to Roberta Vinci, who will play Spain's Laura Pous Tio in the second round.
Tio defeated compatriot and fellow wildcard Lourdes Dominguez Lino 4-6 6-3 6-3.
Third seed Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez beat Andrea Petkovic of Germany 6-4 6-4 to set up a second round meeting with fellow Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja, who defeated Switzerland's Stefanie Voegele 6-4 4-6 6-4.
Russia's fourth seed Maria Kirilenko is also through to the second round after a 7-5 6-1 win over qualifier Masa Zec Peskiric of Slovenia.
Kirilenko will now meet Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova, a 6-1 6-4 victor over Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain.
Sixth seed Gisela Dulko of Argentina was beaten 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-4) by Sara Errani of Italy, while eighth seed Lucie Saforova of the Czech Republic also made an early exit, losing 6-3 7-6 (7-4) to Russia's Regina Kulikova.
Seventh seed Carla Suarez Navarro, Iveta Benesova, Alexandra Dulgheru and Timea Bacsinszky also progressed to the second round.
