French number two eases past Robert

Gael Monfils marked his comeback from injury with a straight-sets victory over fellow Frenchman Stephane Robert at the Madrid Open. The 23-year-old had been out of action for two months with a hand problem but quickly shook off any rust to triumph 6-2 7-5 in the opening round. But former world number one Carlos Moya did not enjoy such a comfortable return from injury as he was thrashed 6-0 6-2 by Benjamin Becker. The German progresses to the second round where he will face number one seed and reigning champion Roger Federer. Feliciano Lopez was not troubled in the first round of his home-town tournament as he cruised past Poland's Lukasz Kubot 6-3 6-3 to set up a meeting with Andy Roddick. Ukrainian qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov will meet Rafael Nadal in the second round after defeating Andreas Seppi in straight sets. Nicolas Almagro, Leonardo Mayer, Jurgen Melzer and Santiago Giraldo all also managed to progress on the opening day of competition.
