Dane overcomes first set loss to progress in Warsaw

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki survived a scare before securing her place in the quarter-finals of the Warsaw Open. The Polish-born Dane dropped the first set against Polona Hercog of Slovenia before winning 2-6 6-3 6-4 in two hours and 11 minutes. However, there was no such luck for second seed Elena Dementieva, who suffered a shock defeat just a week before the start of the French Open. The Russian crashed out 7-5 4-6 6-4 to Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in a match that lasted almost three hours. But there were few problems for the third ranked Li Na of China, who cruised through with a 6-0 6-3 demolition of Poland's Katarzyna Piter. In Strasbourg, top seed Maria Sharapova dispatched qualifier Dia Evtimova 6-3 6-0 to move into the last eight. The Russian former world number one did not face a single break point as she swept past her Bulgarian opponent in just over an hour. Third seed Virginie Razzano from France crashed out as Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson came from a set down to win 3-6 6-3 6-2, while sixth seed Sybille Bammer of Austria went down to Germany's Julia Goerges 6-1 7-6 (8/6).
