Top seeds crash out at Rhode Island

British qualifier Richard Bloomfield has reached the quarter-finals of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships after a stunning victory over second seed Santiago Giraldo. The world number 552 followed up his first round triumph over Christophe Rochus with a second successive straight-sets success at the Rhode Island event. The British number 12 recorded a 6-3 7-6 (7-5) victory over the Columbian second seed and will play American Ryan Harrison for a place in the semi-finals at the grass-court showpiece. There was another major shock as pre-tournament favourite Sam Querrey suffered a straight-sets defeat to Dustin Brown in their second round clash. Top-seeded Querrey, ranked 19th and a three-time winner on the tour this season, was stunned 6-4 6-3 by his Jamaican opponent in just 47 minutes.

Comfortable

The win was Brown's first-ever over a top-20 player, however Querrey was less than impressed with his opponent's tactics during the match. "Half the time I was walking over to the other side and the ball was in the air for him to serve," Querrey said of Brown's fast approach. The 25-year old Jamaican took control by breaking Querrey to go up 3-2 in the fifth game of the second set, winning with a well-placed drop shot at the net. "I wasn't expecting to break him. I knew I was serving well," Brown said. "When I broke him, I just wanted to continue to serve well. Everything just struck together for me. It's going to take a while to sink in." There were no such problems for fifth seed Mardy Fish, who advanced to the third round with a comfortable 6-2 6-0 victory over Somdev Dewarman. Number four seed Olivier Rochus also prevailed, overcoming Ukrainian Sergei Bubka 6-3 6-3. Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, playing in his first tournament since losing to John Isner at Wimbledon in the longest match in tennis history, was defeated by Frank Dancevic, 7-6 (7-5) 6-3. Also on Wednesday, defending champion Rajeev Ram was beaten by Raven Klaasen, 5-7 6-1 7-6 (7-3). Brian Dabul also advanced, beating Go Soeda 7-5, 6-2.
