Top seed Mikhail Youzhny suffered a surprise defeat in the Allianz Suisse Open in Gstaad, losing to qualifier Yuri Schukin in three sets. The Russian world number 14 was expected to breeze through his quarter-final against his opponent from Kazakhstan but crashed out 6-3 2-6 7-5. Richard Gasquet was more successful, maintaining his progress with a quarter-final victory against Albert Montanes. The French seventh seed was in impressive form to oust his fourth-seeded opponent 7-6 (7/5) 6-4 and progress to the last four. In the other quarter-finals, Nicolas Almagro was a 6-2 7-6 (7/5) winner against Jeremy Chardy, while Daniel Gimeno-Traver beat Igor Andreev 6-2 6-4.
