Briton reaches second WTA quarter-final of the season

Heather Watson exacted swift revenge over Stephanie Foretz Gacon as she beat the Frenchwoman to progress to her second WTA quarter-final of the year. The British teenager was beaten by Foretz Gacon in a final set tie-breaker at an ITF event in Missouri last week. However, it was Watson who came through a tight three-set affair on this occasion as she overcame her rival 6-2 5-7 6-4 to book her spot in the last eight of the Cellular South Cup in Memphis. It will mean another boost to Watson's world ranking position with the Briton currently at 145. The 18-year-old will now take on Evgeniya Rodina in the next round after the Russian knocked out third seed Melanie Oudin in straight sets, 6-1 7-5. Sixth seed Rebecca Marino of Canada fared better than Oudin as she outlasted Sorana Cirstea in three sets, eventually prevailing 6-2 4-6 6-3. There was some American success in the form of Coco Vandeweghe who beat compatriot Alexandra Stevenson 6-2 6-2, while Lucie Hradecka won her all-Czech battle with Sandra Zahlavova 6-4 6-3.
