Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo was a casualty on the opening day of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest. The 29-year-old fifth seed slipped to a 6-4 7-6 (7-5) defeat to Brazil's Joao Souza, a player ranked 40 places beneath him in the world rankings, on Monday. In the only other first-round action match of the day, Portugal's Federico Gil came from behind to beat Jeremy Chardy, of France, 2-6 6-4 6-3. Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela is the top seed for the claycourt event at which he is the defending champion.
