Former world number one Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario has been appointed Spain's new Fed Cup captain. Sanchez-Vicario, who was part of all five Spanish Fed Cup triumphs in the 1990s, has been handed a two-year deal by the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation. She will take charge of the team for the first time against Russia in February. Ahead of being officially unveiled at a press conference in Barcelona, the 40-year-old said: "This opportunity is an honour and a huge responsibility." Sanchez-Vicario still holds the Spanish record for Fed Cup victories - 72 in all. She has also played in the most ties (58) in a cup career spanning 16 years. Her appointment comes in the same week as Alex Corretja was named as Spain's new Davis Cup captain on a similar deal.
